Armond Hawkins talks EMU Offer

Rancho Cucmonga (Calif.) cornerback Armond Hawkins first offer was from Eastern Michigan. Hawkins talks about his recruitment with EMU, his thoughts on coach Ron English, a possible visit to Ypsilanti and more.

Rancho Cucmonga (Calif.) cornerback Armond Hawkins has been receiving interest from the Eastern Michigan coaching staff since the middle of his senior season. Last month, the talks with the Eagles became more serious with an Eagles offer.

"It meant a lot to me, it was my first offer," said Hawkins, who comes in at 5-foot-10, 175 pounds. "And they noticed me when I didn't have any stars or anything. "

Hawkins said his talks with EMU coach Ron English has already made an impact on his recruitment.

"It was great," Hawkins said. "I will always talk to coach (Ron) English. He told me how was going to make me better and get me to the NFL."

With the NFL being one of Hawkins goals after college, he said English's past of putting players into the NFL is enticing.

"Yes, it does spark my interest. He's done it a lot and I want him to do it again," Hawkins said.

Eastern Michigan finished 2-10 this past season, but despite the Eagles struggles, Hawkins says past records are no concern.

"It doesn't bother me at all," Hawkins said. "I will help rejuvenate the program and put it back on top."

While Hawkins has no set date to visit Ypsilanti, he said likely visit will happen in January.

Currently, Hawkins has offers from Idaho and North Dakota, and is also getting interest from Nevada and Fresno State.

While there is no favorite in the clubhouse, Hawkins said he is looking for a program with a good team environment and family atmosphere. He noted distance will not be a factor in his final decision. His brother Chris Hawkins is committed to USC and has been giving him advice throughout the recruiting process.

"He told me to look for a coach that doesn't talk about other coaches," Hawkins said on his brothers advice. "Look for a coach that recruits you, and be a great coach, and not try to down talk anybody else's program or anything else."
